Triangle Bikeway
Triangle Bikeway
The Triangle Bikeway is a 23 mile shared use path linking Raleigh, Cary, Morrisville, Research Triangle Park (RTP), Durham, and Chapel Hill. Portions of the project are in various stages of design. Triangle Bikeway East, is about 14 miles of the larger project, linking RTP to Raleigh. This eastern portion of the project is funded by Wake County & the Research Triangle Foundation (RTF) and is Managed by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO).
Triangle Bikeway East Design Project
Preliminary Design
Triangle Bikeway East Design Project is 14 miles of the larger Triangle Bikeway project corridor. This eastern portion of the project is developing connections from Research Triangle Park to the Museum of Art Bridge over I-440 in Raleigh. The Triangle Bikeway East Design Project will look to further advance the design of the project, position the project for future construction funding opportunities, and complete federally required documentation.
*Disclaimer: The above map is not representative of the final alignment, but represents the general bikeway corridor. This design phase will refine alignment further.
Current Activities Include
- Continued coordination with Wake County, Research Triangle Park (RTP), Durham County, City of Durham, Cary, Morrisville, Raleigh
- Continued preliminary design work to reach 30% design
- Land survey activities along the corridor
- National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) documentation and related activities
Next Steps
- Public information and outreach is anticipated early 2026 which will include updated design plans and alternatives for the Triangle Bikeway East Design Project.
Project History: Planning Phase
The Triangle Bikeway Feasibility and Implementation study was completed in 2022. The bikeway corridor is planned to be approximately 23 miles connecting Chapel Hill, Research Triangle Park, and Raleigh. The bikeway will connect Triangle communities making both short and long bike trips for work, play and daily errands possible. Ideas from residents, other community members, and key stakeholders helped shape the plan. Agencies across the region worked together in the planning process, which took approximately 18 months.
